26 and 27 December, 2021
Trail 16, Trail 26 and Trail 51-Panther Rock (and Trail 22)
After check-in, we decided to spend a couple of the remaining daylight hours exploring the trailheads and maps. A herd of elk was blocking one of the upper trails, and while we were stopped so Becky could take some pictures, a group of SxS’s came up. We talked for a few minutes, and they invited us to follow them back down to the overlook.
This view alone is worth the admission price, and if you are lucky enough to be able to watch the sun set from this area, I promise it is breathtakingly beautiful. I think we took more photographs there than we did of the entire Badge of Honor Trails.
I can’t go on without mentioning Corey. He actually drove up to watch the sunset, and we started talking. We had heard mixed reports about the trails, and he offered to guide us through them. Turns out, he stays at the park for a few months every year, and, just like that, we had one of the best guides ever!
I should also mention that our WindRock Park adventures started right then and there. It took us a few hours, and we lost site of him several times, but he’d start giving me directions over the GMRS. He was guiding me through just by watching my headlights. At the end of each obstacle, we’d see his brake lights and he’d take off again. The GMRS was our only link, most of the night, through the darkness and low clouds.
We made it back to the yurt around 3AM. The plan was to get a couple of hours’ sleep and hit the trails early. As promised, Corey was ready at 7AM, and we hit trail 22 headed for #51 and Panther Rock.
Our Christmas vacation wasn’t quite over.
We had one more stop to make on the way home…
We met Gunner in Augusta, Georgia! He’s a big fella, and friendly enough. He had been looking for a home, and we were looking for Bonny a playmate. The two hit it off immediately. That’s the complete story of Two Jeeps, Two Drivers, Two Dogs.
